Plan the route. Check it fits. Then drive.

TowWise is a route planning tool for people towing caravans and trailers in Australia. You enter your vehicle and trailer dimensions, it plans a route, then checks that route against recorded height, width and length limits before it shows you anything.

Free to use. Public launch October 2026. Closed beta complete.

Ute towing a caravan on an Australian coastal road

How it works

  1. Enter your dimensions once.

Height, width, length and axle count for your vehicle and trailer. Weight limits are optional and off by default. Your dimensions stay in your browser.

  2. The route is checked road by road.

TowWise asks for a route that suits your dimensions, then checks every road on it against a separate list of recorded limits that we build and maintain ourselves.

  3. It only shows a route that fits.

If a road on the route has a recorded limit lower than your vehicle and trailer, that route is not shown. TowWise looks for another way and checks that one too. If nothing can be checked, it tells you so instead of guessing. You can also see your route beside a standard car route, so you know where they differ and why.

TowWise is a planning tool you use before you leave the driveway. It does not give directions while you drive.

What it checks, and what it cannot see

What TowWise checks

  • Recorded height limits on the roads in your route
  • Recorded width and length limits, where they exist
  • Recorded weight limits, if you turn weight checking on
  • Whether an alternative route also fits, before showing it

What TowWise does not know about

  • Roadworks, temporary detours and road closures
  • Traffic, weather and road condition
  • Trees or branches over the road
  • Narrow streets, tight turns, steep grades and turning space
  • Any limit that has not been recorded in the data we check

No dataset covers every restriction in Australia, and ours does not either. Height limits are recorded far more often than width limits, so a clean width result means less than a clean height result. TowWise says this in the app. You must still check signs and conditions on the day.

Why we built it

In August 2026, while testing before our first release, we asked a commercial routing service for a route that suited a 4.0 metre high caravan. It accepted the height, confirmed it back to us, and routed the caravan straight under a rail bridge signed at 3.8 metres. The bridge was on the road. It was not in the routing service's data, and the service gave no warning that anything was missing.

We stopped the release that morning and rebuilt TowWise around one rule: a routing service accepting your dimensions is not the same as enforcing them. Every route TowWise shows has been checked a second time, against our own list, by us. If that check cannot be done, no route is shown.

What the beta told us

Closed beta, August and September 2026

Testers in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia planned routes with TowWise over five weeks, from short local trips to a 3,300 kilometre run across Western Australia.

  • On two routes, TowWise found a recorded limit lower than the tester's vehicle and trailer on the road it was given, did not show that route, found an alternative and checked it before showing it.
  • Testers told us about hazards that are not in any dataset: overhanging trees, tight bridges, town centres that are a poor choice with a long trailer. That local knowledge is the most valuable thing we received, and it is why every route result now says plainly what TowWise cannot see.
  • One tester told us a bridge in our data had been demolished. He was right. Recorded limits can be out of date, and TowWise says so.

Questions people ask

Is TowWise a navigation app?
No. It is a planning tool. You plan the route before you leave, then use whatever you normally use to drive it. TowWise does not give directions while you drive.
Is it free?
Yes. TowWise has a fixed monthly search allowance shared across everyone who uses it. When the month's allowance is used, some features pause until it resets. If enough people keep hitting that limit, we will look at a paid plan.
How much data does it check against?
A lot more height limits than width limits, and never a complete list. We do not quote numbers because they change every time the data refreshes, and one bridge can appear as several records.
Does it know about roadworks or closures?
No. TowWise has no roadworks, closure, traffic or weather data. It checks recorded limits only.
What if a limit in the app is wrong?
Tell us. We check reports rather than acting on them straight away, because a report is a signal, not an edit. Email support@towwise.online.
Do I need an account?
No. Your dimensions are stored in your browser, not with us.
